The Ghana YMCA convened young people from its five administrative regions for the 23rd National Youth Conference, held from 3rd to 6th September 2026 in Takoradi, Western Region.
Organised under the theme, “Transform: Empowering Young People for a Just, Sustainable and Thriving Future,” the conference provided a platform for learning, leadership development, networking and youth participation in the governance of the Association.
Participants arrived on Thursday, 3rd September, for registration and orientation. The official opening ceremony took place on Friday, 4th September, and brought together young delegates, staff, volunteers and distinguished guests.
Among the dignitaries present were Lawyer Frederick Faidoo, Mayor of Sekondi-Takoradi; Madam Ivy Yeboah, Western Regional Head of Training Quality Assurance at GTVET; Mr. George Dela Coffie, National President of the Ghana YMCA; Mr. Kwabena Nketia Addae, Executive Director; Mr. Augustine Sakwa, Immediate Past National Vice President; and Mr. Prince Allotey, Immediate Past National Treasurer.
In their goodwill messages, the National President and Executive Director emphasised the importance of the National Youth Conference as a platform for empowering young people, developing future leaders and strengthening youth participation within the Ghana YMCA.
Delivering the keynote address, Lawyer Frederick Faidoo highlighted the need to continually create opportunities that enable young people to develop their potential. He called for greater investment in youth development, entrepreneurship, innovation, sports and relevant skills training.
He also encouraged institutions and leaders to pay closer attention to the needs and aspirations of young people. In addition, he challenged the youth to take an active role in finding practical and sustainable solutions to environmental challenges affecting their communities and the country.
As part of the opening ceremony, citations were presented to deserving youth members and staff in recognition of their hard work, commitment and dedicated service to the Ghana YMCA.
Building Knowledge and Leadership
The conference featured several educational and capacity-building sessions designed to equip participants with relevant knowledge and practical skills.
Mr. Gabriel Ofori Appiah, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana YMCA, facilitated a workshop on cybersecurity, helping participants understand online risks and the importance of protecting their personal information and digital identities.
Participants were also introduced to the World YMCA Vision 2030 pillars. Mr. Maxwell Kyizagl, National Communications Officer, facilitated a session on the Just World pillar, highlighting the role of young people in promoting justice, inclusion, peace and equitable opportunities within their communities.
Educational Visit to the Sekondi Naval Base
On the third day of the conference, participants visited the Sekondi Naval Base for an educational and recreational experience.
The visit offered participants valuable insights into the operations and responsibilities of the Ghana Navy. They toured the base, viewed naval ships and learned about maritime security, discipline, leadership and national service.
The Ghana YMCA sincerely appreciates the Ghana Navy for the warm reception and the enriching learning experience provided to the participants.
Election of National Youth Executives
A major highlight of the conference was the election of new National Youth Executives. A total of 23 delegates participated in the peaceful and transparent voting process, demonstrating the Ghana YMCA’s commitment to democratic leadership and meaningful youth participation.
At the end of the election, the following officers were elected:
- Helmut Okunor Kabu — National Youth Chairperson
- Priscilla Entsie — National Youth Vice Chairperson
- Ewura Adwoa Awuaa Kissiedu — National Youth Secretary
- David Kumah — National Youth Organiser
The Ghana YMCA congratulates the newly elected National Youth Executives and wishes them every success as they assume their respective positions. The Association looks forward to their leadership, commitment and fresh ideas in advancing youth development and strengthening the YMCA movement across Ghana.
The 23rd National Youth Conference reaffirmed the Ghana YMCA’s commitment to creating inclusive platforms where young people can learn, lead, connect and contribute to building a just, sustainable and thriving future.
