Regional Overview
The Eastern Regional YMCA has been in existence since the formation of its first branch at Old Tafo, Akim Abuakwa in 1957. With eleven active branches, the Eastern Region YMCA has themost number of active branches in the country, which run different programmes and projects in their various communities. The region has branches in the following towns/communities; Asamankese, Oda, Koforidua, Jumapo, Nnudu, Mampong Akwapim, Osenase, Akyem Hemang, Asesseeso, Mpraeso, Aburi, Larteh Donkorkrom, Kukurantumi and Somanya.
The Eastern Regional YMCA has a strong record in delivering early childhood education through daycare centres in communities where the YMCA has local branches. There are four preschool and kindergarten facilities with one each at Jumapo, Nnudu, Asamankese and Donkorkrom. The Mpraeso and Oda schools have developed beyond early childhood education facilities to fully-fledged basic education schools following the addition of upper primary and junior high school classes. All these schools are run either under the total or partial supervision of local YMCA leadership.
The Mpraeso YMCA school, which is the most successful YMCA school in the Eastern Region and Ghana at large was established in 1996. Since its establishment, the school has educated two thousand six hundred and forty-one (2,641) pupils. It currently has a total enrolment of 516 students and a staff strength of 32 employees. The school won the maiden Easter Mpraeso Caucus quiz in 2018 and placed second in the subsequent edition organised in 2019.
The Region has partnered with many like-minded organisations in furtherance of its development goals and strategic growth. The Mpraeso YMCA partnered with Erndtebruck CVJM from Germany in 1985. The outcome of the partnership was financial support for the construction of a seven-bedroom facility which presently accommodates Mpraeso YMCA school staff.
The Eastern Regional YMCA also receives German volunteers from the German Internship Programme who are posted to Mpraeso to work the YMCA school for a specific period.
