ABOUT MHEC
A Trusted Media & Film Education Hub for West Africa
The Media Hub Education Centre (MHEC) is a flagship initiative of YMCA Ghana, born from a comprehensive stakeholder conference that brought together industry players, educators, and filmmakers to establish a sustainable framework for media education across the West African Sub-Region.
With 50% of Ghana’s population below age 16, MHEC responds to the urgent need to diversify education, reduce competition for formal institutes, and balance technical knowledge with occupational skills to service the growth of developing nations.

Eight Pathways Into The Film Industry
Writing & Directing for Fiction
Master the craft of storytelling — develop scripts and direct compelling fictional narratives for film.
Writing & Directing for Documentary
Tell real stories with impact. Learn documentary filmmaking from concept through to final cut.
Editing
Shape the story in post-production. Master professional editing software and narrative pacing.
Sound Design
Create immersive audio landscapes. Learn location sound recording, foley, and post-production mixing.
Cinematography
Master the visual language of film — camera operation, lighting, and composition for West African stories.
Set Design
Build believable worlds on screen. Learn production design, art direction, and set construction.
Makeup
Transform performers using professional makeup artistry for film, television, and stage productions.
Producing
Manage the full production lifecycle — from development and financing to delivery and distribution.
HOW IT STARTED
Born From A Vision To Serve West African Youth
MHEC was born from the “All on Board” film project — a collaboration between WELTFILME.org and YMCA Ghana launched in March 2018. The initiative trained more than 80 young talented filmmakers and film producers in writing, editing, and production of fictional and documentary films.
The partnership produced six short films — three fictional movies and three documentaries — highlighting issues of discrimination and abuse in the West African Sub-Region. These graduates continue to use film to address key questions in their communities.
A landmark stakeholder conference in 2019 brought together esteemed industry players to finalise the MHEC curriculum, create a roadmap for a regional film network, and establish an economically sustainable model for the Hub.
