Green Futures: From Local Action to a Growing Youth-Led Model

Green Futures is Western Regional YMCA’s flagship environmental sustainability programme, developed to place young people at the centre of practical responses to plastic pollution and climate change. The programme recognises that environmental challenges facing coastal communities are also challenges of education, livelihoods and opportunity. Its approach therefore goes beyond clean-ups, connecting plastic recovery, upcycling, environmental education, green skills, youth leadership and community action within one integrated programme.

At community level, young people mobilise to recover plastic waste through clean-ups and other collection activities. Recovered materials are channelled into upcycling and skills development, demonstrating that materials ordinarily treated as waste can become useful products and sources of opportunity. Green Futures has facilitated the recovery of more than 100,000 plastic items and the production of 250+ upcycled products, alongside environmental education and youth-led action in schools and communities.

A major intervention within the programme is Green Bags, which transforms recovered plastic materials into durable upcycled school bags. Young people develop practical production and vocational skills through the process, while individuals and organisations can sponsor bags that are filled with educational materials and donated to underserved students. The model also creates a pathway towards longer-term sustainability, with margins from commercial Green Bag sales reinvested into vocational training scholarships for vulnerable young people.

Green Futures also works upstream to reduce plastic consumption through Fetch n Go. The initiative supports schools to systematically reduce their reliance on single-use plastic water bottles through refill systems, environmental education and behaviour change. Three schools have received water dispensers and signed a Green Pledge, committing themselves to progressively reducing plastic waste. The intervention is reinforced through waste segregation, student leadership and continued engagement with participating schools.

Skills and livelihoods are integral to the programme. Green Futures particularly seeks to create opportunities for single mothers, teenage mothers, persons with disabilities and vulnerable young people from coastal communities affected by climate change and plastic pollution. By connecting vocational skills with upcycling and circular-economy activities, the programme seeks to ensure that environmental action can also contribute to economic inclusion and more sustainable livelihoods.

The programme has attracted growing support beyond the Western Region. Green Futures began with a US$6,000 Youth-Led Solutions grant, subsequently secured €20,000 through the Youth Empowerment Fund (YEF) to support expansion through 2027, and in 2026 received a further US$10,000 Youth-Led Solutions grant. This progression from initial pilot funding to successive investments reflects growing confidence in the programme’s youth-led model, demonstrated results and potential for scale.

Green Futures has also gained international visibility within the YMCA movement. The initiative was selected for presentation through the Solution Studios at the 2026 YMCA World Council, providing an opportunity to exhibit the programme and share its approach with YMCA leaders and delegates from around the world. This recognition has helped position a locally developed response from Ghana’s Western Region within a wider global conversation about youth-led environmental solutions.

Ultimately, Green Futures demonstrates a simple but powerful cycle: recover waste, build skills, create useful products, expand educational opportunity and reinvest in young people. Through Green Bags, Fetch n Go, environmental education and green skills development, Western Regional YMCA is working towards a model in which young people are not merely beneficiaries of climate action, but leaders, innovators and livelihood creators shaping a more sustainable future.
